2002 Dodge Viper RT/10 Description

The 2002 Dodge Viper RT/10 was the final model year of the second-generation Viper (SR II), a raw and powerful American sports car designed to evoke the spirit of classic muscle cars like the Shelby Cobra. It was a convertible roadster known for its aggressive styling, immense performance, and minimal creature comforts, prioritizing driving purity over luxury.

Design and Styling

Exterior: The 2002 Viper RT/10 featured sharp, angular bodywork inspired by the Viper GTS-R concept from 2000. It had a long hood, a bold crossbar grille, and large side air scoops in the front fenders. Unlike earlier RT/10 models with side-exit exhausts, the 1996–2002 models had rear-exit exhausts through two large central tailpipes, reducing backpressure. The RT/10 came with a manually folding soft top and an optional removable hardtop with sliding plastic window panels. It rode on 18-inch forged aluminum wheels (five-spoke design) with massive P275/35ZR18 front and P335/30ZR18 rear tires. The car measured 176.4 inches long, 75.7 inches wide, 44.0 inches tall, with a 96.2-inch wheelbase. Available colors varied by year, with 2002 offering options like Viper Red, Viper Race Yellow, and others, with some featuring racing stripes.

Interior: The cabin was spartan, designed for performance enthusiasts. It featured low, reclining bucket seats with lumbar adjustment but fixed positioning, wrapped in black leather or optional Cognac Connolly leather (introduced in 1999). The interior included analog gauges, dual airbags, power windows, power door locks, and adjustable pedals. Air conditioning and an Alpine sound system with a CD player were standard, though the overall feel was dominated by functional, hard plastics, emphasizing performance over refinement. Entry and exit were challenging due to the low stance and wide sills.

Performance and Mechanicals

Engine: The RT/10 was powered by an 8.0-liter (488 cu in) V10 engine, producing 450 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 490 lb-ft of torque at 3,700 rpm. This was an upgrade from earlier models, with a reworked block, new heads, and a lighter design (85 pounds less than the original RT/10’s engine). The V10, designed with input from Lamborghini (then owned by Chrysler), delivered raw power with a distinctive roar.

Transmission: Power was sent to the rear wheels via a Tremec six-speed manual transmission, the only option available. The car featured a limited-slip differential and 3.07 rear gears, enabling a 0–60 mph sprint in approximately 4.0 seconds and a top speed near 185 mph.

Chassis and Suspension: The 2002 RT/10 had a stiffened chassis (80 pounds lighter than the first generation) and a revised suspension with aluminum components for improved handling. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were introduced in 2001, enhancing safety, though traction control was not available until later models. The steering was rack-and-pinion, and the turning diameter was 40.5 feet.

Fuel Economy: The Viper RT/10 achieved an EPA-estimated 11 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, reflecting its performance-focused design. The fuel tank held 19 gallons.

Features and Options

Standard Features: Included keyless entry, fog lights, leather seats, bucket seats, an Alpine sound system, and ABS.

Optional Features: A removable hardtop, tonneau cover, and specific color options like Viper Gun Metal Grey with stripes. The 2002 model a rare with the Cognac Connolly leather interior.
