The Dodge Viper has proven to be one of the most exciting American cars ever built. With inspiration from the Shelby Cobra, it made huge waves when introduced as a concept car in 1989. This black 2004 model represents a desirable third generation model with its aggressive design, folding soft top, 500hp V10, and amazing performance.
This Viper has 39k miles (about 2,200 per year) and a clean Autocheck report. The third generation design is leaner and meaner than any of its predecessors. And while it has a longer wheelbase than the previous generation, it is actually shorter overall. This triple black car has a very sinister look, especially with the tinted windows. The black soft top is in good condition while the factory polished aluminum wheels are a nice accent.
Under the hood is the monstrous V10 often referred to as the 500/500/500 setup (500+ cubic inches, 500hp, and 500ft-lbs). This is coupled to a Tremec T56 6-speed manual, while the rear end has a 3.07 gear ratio. There is an aftermarket cat-back exhaust which makes more growl than the factory setup. Performance is outstanding; this car will run an 11-second quarter mile, has a top speed of almost 200mph, and will do 0.97g on the skidpad. The brakes are very capable as well and do have ABS which was introduced on this generation.
The interior is also an upgrade over previous models. The black sport seats with grey suede inserts hold you low and firm, with a better seating position that is more in-line with the adjustable pedals. The layout of controls and instruments is very clean and straightforward. It almost feels like a fighter jet cockpit, but with power windows and air conditioning. There is also an aftermarket sound system that includes a backup camera and navigation.
There are all sorts of 2-seat roadsters in the world. But there is only one Viper. Aside from all its improvements, this car remains raw and pure with a far better driver connection than some paddle-shifted luxury coupe. The Viper market has been on fire lately with some models soaring past $200k. While nobody can predict what prices will do from here, it’s a safe bet you will not find this car boring.
