The Porsche 968 is a sports car sold by Porsche AG from 1992 to 1995. It took over the entry-level position in Porsche’s lineup from the Porsche 944, with which it shared about 20% of its parts. The Porsche 968 became the final model in an evolving line, starting almost 20 years earlier with the introduction of the Porsche 924 and ending with the Turbo S, Turbo RS, and Turbo RS Lemans, which are three separate versions of the Porsche 968. Like the 944, the 968 was sold as both a coupe and a convertible. Much of the 968’s chassis was carried over from the 944S2, which in itself shared many components with the 944 Turbo (internally numbered 951). Borrowed components include the Brembo-sourced 4-piston brake calipers on all four wheels, aluminum semi-trailing arms and aluminum front A-arms, used in a Macpherson strut arrangement. The steel unibody structure was also very similar to that of the previous models. Porsche maintained that 80% of the car was new.
Gracing our Hallowed Halls here at Classic Auto Mall is this 90’s dream car, the Porsche 968 from 1994. This S3 version is a high-speed grand touring cruiser that has been modified into more of a track day competitor with a multitude of bolt ons and upgrades. It has inserted a Speedforce Racing supercharger, Porsche GT3 seats, Leda adjustable coilovers, and Fabcar control arms which helps keep the rubber on the road.
Exterior
Stunning quintessential German black paint drapes the straight rust-free steel and aluminum rounded panels for this sports car, however a few dings and stone chips are noted. Flipping up rounded headlights, which are fascinating to watch, come to life with the flick of the switch, and appear to be floating on the leading edges of the fenders when open. Low low drag coefficient kept this model up to snuff with the sleekest and fastest of the day. The floor pans, roof, and rear quarters are galvanized steel, and totally rust resistant. Integrated bumpers all around, all body matching and rounded flush mount taillights complete the aero package. Up front, a custom aluminum front splitter has been added, a moon roof is on top and 968 Turbo 3 piece adjustable rear spoiler in contrasting carbon fiber are seen at the back of the rear greenhouse glass. 18-inch Porsche 968 Turbo 3-piece wheels are on the corners and are wrapped in newer low profile staggered width rubber. A front engine car that says SCHNELL! loudly.
Interior
Charcoal gray, all business and tear free as well as fairly clean is the description for this interior. High backed, leather wrapped, body contoured front bucket seats are courtesy of a Porsche GT3 with provisions for the 6-point camlock racing harnesses gracing the front of this race inspired cockpit. The driver’s seat now has a custom aluminum mounting bracket allowing for adjustability for the driver. The console races between the seat and swoops up to meet the original crack free dash, along the way showing off the Alcantara covered shifter, a boost and wideband gauge as well as an aftermarket AM/FM/CD player. The dash contains all the essentials and displays enough gauges to satisfy even the most discriminating 747 pilot. Fronting the dash is a Momo 3 spoke steering wheel with the Porsche crest in the center, mounted atop a steering wheel extender. Charcoal carpet floods the floors and is looking nice and clean and an Autocar roll cage has been added to keep the driver and passenger safe lest the shicanes prove too much for the suspension. A moonroof is noted in the smooth partially finished black vinyl headliner.
Drivetrain
Under the long hood things start to get interesting, we see a 3.0 Liter 4 cylinder that is fed by EFI but the tech doesn’t just stop there. Giving the big 4 cylinder a kick in the pants is a Speed Force Racing intercooled supercharger putting out 7psi making a consignor stated 378hp. A SMT6 piggyback controller is on to dial in the air and fuel just right baby bear. New rod bearings have been installed as well as a new water pump, hoses, radiator and mounts. Keeping the oil cool is a modified RX-7 external oil cooler and a Lindsey oil pan baffle along with KLA oil pan braces are on. We also note Nology spark plug wires and new Variocam pads and racing cam chain. Bolted to the back of the mill is a 6-speed manual transmission with a new clutch and putting the power to the pavement is a 3.77 geared rear axle. Connecting the strut towers is a KLA bar and Racers Edge caster/camber plates are also seen.
Undercarriage
Rust free and looking garaged and covered in a nice patina that comes with maturity on any car. Just fine and structurally sound underneath. Plenty of ground effects panels the German engineers were famous for, and front and rear power disc brakes extra-large for plenty of woah! when you need it. Getting the power to the road and handling the twisties is an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and Leda adjustable coil overs and in the rear is an independent suspension with more Leda coilovers. The torsion bars have been removed and we see Porsche M030 front and rear sway bars, (the rear is adjustable), Fabcar control arms, Racers Edge sway bar mounts, and adjustable rear sway bar drop links. Handling the exhale is a Speed Force Racing stage 1 header and B&B cat back exhaust system.
Drive-Ability
Slipping inside this car fired right up, and off we went to the test track. Here it handled very nicely, had tight steering, and straight bias free panic stopping. This car will keep you on the edge of your seat due to its perfect balance… well more like your butt at the back of the seat! “Porsche, there is no substitute!” Thanks to all the suspension upgrades and the big pony count under the hood I was able to set a new lap time around our patented but never duplicated track.
This 968 with the 6-speed manual transmission and supercharged 4 cylinder is a high horsepower corner carving car. The scenic backroads of Southeastern PA have an abundance of curves for you to tackle and when you figure out your route, I’d like to go along. A rounded smoother over aero look, and a star of the 1990’s, residing in our West Mallway is ready to turn you into a track day hero!
