    1970 Mercury Marauder

While the big manufacturers were all competing for the hottest muscle car the full size vehicle market was left open and Mercury threw their hat in the ring with the classic Marauder. The received some of the popular muscle car styling like the fastback roof line but were sold as a personal full size luxury vehicle. It was their highest performance version in this line of cars and although initially being a trim level it transitioned to its own model in 1966. The name was derived from Mercury’s top of the line engine at the time. These 121 wheelbase cars had neat designs incorporated into them like the tunneled rear window and concealed headlights. This 1970 belongs to the second generation and is in excellent condition throughout. It is currently part of a private collection and looking it over it is clear it had been well maintained since new. It is a nice survivor which has around 71,500 miles but it sure doesn’t look like it. The body is all solid and painted in its original Medium Blue color paired with a Black vinyl top. All of the original style chrome and stainless trim is cleanly mounted in place and has a great shine. The glass is all in great shape as well. All of the exterior electrical like the hideaway lights are working properly. The original steel wheels are painted to match and feature chrome hubcaps and thin white wall tires.

The car is powered by its original 390c.i. and runs out great. It has a very stock appearance under the hood with a single snorkel Ford Blue air cleaner and “Powered by Ford” valve covers. The engine is combined with the optional heavy duty C6 3 speed automatic transmission. The suspension and brakes are all the stock set up and all functioning properly. Underneath the car is all solid with solid rust free floors.

The interior is complete in its original Medium Blue color and the upholstery is all in excellent condition. The seats, carpet, door panels, and headliner all really look good. It has dual bucket seats with a factory center console and horseshoe shifter. The dash is free from any cracks and features all of its original style controls, gauges and faux wood trim. The AC system blows cold and you can tell this car was meant to be luxurious as it was factory ordered with AC, power windows, power steering and power brakes. It even has the remote interior control for the drivers mirror which was a pretty fresh idea at the time. The trunk offers plenty of storage space and houses a matching spare.

This is a really neat car and a very clean example of a 1970 Mercury. You don’t see a ton of these especially in such a clean condition.
