Historically, Cobras were built with a singular focus. They were designed to get around a track as fast as possible without breaking anything in the process. But, as the Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “Everything changes, and nothing stands still”. These days, Cobras have evolved to not only be great track cars, but also great investments, storied show cars and exceptionally fun cruisers. Speaking of fun, show worthy classics that can still kick asphalt at the track, check out this freshly-built, 6-figure Superformance Mk III. Since you can already see the car’s charming aesthetics, and you already know that Superformance builds the only Shelby-licensed Cobra replica on the market, the show and go parts of the equation are obvious. What isn’t so obvious is custom, diamond-stitched leather and a smooth Ford AOD automatic that make the car an excellent companion cruising. Looking for a top-notch Cobra that isn’t afraid to be a little different? Look no further than this little piece of Portofino Blue glory!
BUILD/APPEARANCE
Superformance has always prided themselves in providing exceptional re-creations of exceptional classics. The firm’s GT40 replicas are so accurate that, in addition to being legally allowed to use the GT40 name, they’re eligible for inclusion in the official GT40 Registry. Naturally, that same mindset applies to the firm’s Mk II and Mk III roadsters. This Mk III’s sublime body utilizes high quality, hand-laminated fiberglass to create a rock-solid drop-top that provides a first-rate driving experience. Those stiffly reinforced panels display the smooth surfaces and typically tight gaps we’ve come to expect from top tier builds. Those excellent bones stretch sunny Portofino Blue 2-stage across a hoopless profile. And overall, this Shelby’s timeless combination of killer style, serious performance and contemporary build techniques creates an irresistible curve carver that’ll keep onlookers marveling!
Contemporary pigment is only part of this beast’s uncanny allure. The car’s acute, 6-figure build, completed in December of 2017 by Mansfield Motor Group, simply nailed the details, mixing just enough polish with perfect texture. Up front, a polished Nudge Bar protects silver grilles, clear parking lamps and stainless-trimmed halogen headlights. A small hood anchors an integrated scoop in front of locking latches, polished wipers and a chrome-trimmed windscreen that’s dressed in tinted visors and clear wings. Behind that screen, a tight tonneau interchanges with a soft convertible top that’s complete with Lexan side windows. Those windows are reflected in Tex bullet-style mirrors, which perfectly complement polished heat extractors and a polished, Monza-style fuel filler. And at the back of the car, a second polished Nudge Bar traces small taillights, polished trunk hardware and a pair of polished exhaust pipes.
POWER
Tilt this roadster’s lightweight hood and you’ll find a Roush Performance 427 IR small block that twists 561 dyno-proven horsepower into 541 lb./ft. of tire-killing torque! Built from the ground up as your ticket to major acceleration and insane speed, this $28K mill is founded on an iron block, a steel crank, a roller cam, H-beam connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons. At the top of the surly engine, modern electronic fuel injection seats eight polished stacks under eight reusable filters. Those stacks feed aluminum, CNC-ported heads, which hide tough hydraulic roller lifters under trick Roush valve covers. Fire is provided by a fresh Bosch coil, which is connected to an MSD Pro-Billet distributor and loomed Roush plug wires. Cooling comes courtesy of a polished Edelbrock water pump, which, with the help of a beefy radiator, circulates water around a polished expansion tank and two electric puller fans. Ceramic-coated headers jettison spent gases in to a full, leg-saving exhaust system. And at the front of the block, polished Roush pulleys front polished Roush brackets and a polished alternator. Aesthetically, the hot engine, built by Roush Performance in 2017, looks right at home in the car’s aluminum bay. And well-planned details, like a polished oil cap and braided fluid lines, are both functional and appealing.
POWER MANAGEMENT
One of the best things about buying any high quality replica is the modern hardware underneath. Fully sorted and ready to roll, this roadster’s Superformance heavy wall Jig-welded frame and fully independent suspension are primed for cruising or sprinting. At the center of those components, a fresh Ford AOD 4-speed twists torque to a tough Dana third member, which spins a ZF limited-slip differential around fresh, highway-friendly gears. Turns come courtesy of manual rack-and-pinion steering. Solid stops are provided by power-assisted Wilwood calipers, which clamp four vented discs. Torque meets the tarmac through Shelby/American Racing Pin Drive Wheels, which twist 275/35ZR18 BF Goodrich g-Force Rivals in front of 335/30ZR18 BF Goodrich g-Force Rivals. And details like polished floors and a deep-sump oil pan round out an otherwise impressive build.
COMFORT
Often, Cobra interiors are somewhat of an afterthought. After all, these cars are purpose-built performers that are supposed to be charmingly raw. The owner of this Mk III wanted a well-rounded classic that, in addition to carving curves, could double as a comfortable cruiser. Nowhere is that more evident than in the car’s custom, diamond-stitched cockpit. Sliding seats wrap 2-point safety harnesses around body-matched stitching and color-keyed piping. In front of those seats, a leather-wrapped dash hangs a locking glovebox beside a clean combination of Smiths and Lucas gauges. At the sides of that dash, lightweight doors found polished poppers behind intricate panels. Below those doors, color-keyed mats surf clean carpet. Between those mats, a leather-wrapped tunnel hosts a booted shifter and a polished handbrake. In front of the driver, a wood-rimmed steering wheel twists polished spokes around a requisite Shelby emblem. And behind the passenger’s, a carpeted trunk features plenty of storage space.
